The Unbelieved Stylist

Shoppers use AI to decide what to buy, though most surveyed do not fully trust it. In one survey, apparel and footwear were 45 per cent of regretted AI-led purchases.

What is it?

AI recommendations now shape what people buy, clothes included, though surveys find most shoppers do not fully trust them. In one SmartCustomer survey, apparel and footwear were 45 per cent of regretted AI-led purchases. Whether doubt ever slows the use stays open.

Why now?

SmartCustomer found that 76 per cent of the shoppers who do not fully trust AI recommendations had still used AI to make purchases in the past year. Pacsun reports a similar split among young people. In several surveys, use and belief sit far apart.

Who’s building it?

Assistants supply the advice; survey firms, retailers and fashion media record how far it is trusted.

Gatekeepers — AI companies, whom 98 per cent say should share responsibility for sources.
What’s at stake

A third regretted an AI-led purchase, SmartCustomer found.
53% of respondents suspect misleading company information shapes AI recommendations.
What’s unsettled
Whether stated distrust ever reduces use, or only sits beside it.
Whether younger users, who research with AI more, trust it more.
Whether apparel’s large share of regret reflects the category or the volume of purchases.
02 · How the demand matureda progression, not a timeline
Reliance
SmartCustomer: 76 per cent of doubters bought with AI this past year.
Regret
Apparel and footwear were 45 per cent of regretted purchases, SmartCustomer says.
Younger users

Trade
Interline: nine in ten use AI daily, about a quarter trust it for important decisions.
03 · Where the market goesthe forks, not a prediction
→Doubt slows use — shoppers who regret a purchase on AI advice may start checking it against friends, shops and reviews.
→Use could continue beside the doubt, as it already does in SmartCustomer’s survey figures.
→Suspicion could spread: over half in one survey suspect companies of releasing misleading information to influence AI recommendations.
→Younger users’ heavier use could spread to parents, or the generations could stay apart.
The use is already counted and the doubt is already counted; the open part is whether doubt ever changes behaviour, or buying simply carries on beside it.

The panel on this signal
They agreed on
–Shoppers use AI to decide what to buy, and most of those surveyed do not fully trust its advice.
–Regretted purchases concentrate in electronics, then apparel and footwear.
–Fashion professionals, per The Interline, show the same distance between use and trust.
The behavioral economist disagreed on
–Stated trust and revealed preference often diverge, so survey doubt does not show that shoppers will stop acting on AI advice.
