The Pre-Advised Shopper

AI now gives shoppers the judgement a beauty advisor once gave at the counter, earlier and online. The licensed in-person job keeps growing anyway.

What is it?

A shopper now often reaches a beauty counter already holding an AI-generated recommendation, formed earlier in her search. NielsenIQ frames AI as a trusted advisor at that discovery stage, while licensed skincare specialists — the in-person version of that judgement — are projected to keep growing, not shrink.

Why now?

NielsenIQ’s 2026 research finds 49% of shoppers already received a beauty recommendation from a generative-AI platform, and half want more. The same year, U.S. labour projections show licensed skincare specialists growing 9% through 2035 — the discovery channel shifts while the in-person job keeps expanding underneath it.

Who’s building it?

AI platforms build the discovery-stage recommendation; licensed estheticians still perform the in-person judgement it feeds into.

The panel on this signal
They agreed on
–AI is absorbing a real share of the advisory step, specifically at the online discovery stage.
–Licensed in-person specialists are growing steadily, not shrinking at all.
–The shift is a channel change, not a measured headcount loss.
The consumer-research methodologist disagreed on
–Platform-usage figures and a retailer’s survey are not the same evidence, and treating them as equal overstates how measured this is.
