The Co-Piloted Airspace

The FAA has begun using an AI-supported scheduling engine, and every suggestion goes to staff who can accept it or pass. The machine plans flows; people keep the call.

What is it?

An AI-supported engine now proposes how US air traffic should flow, hours to weeks ahead, from 200 data streams. Every suggestion goes to FAA staff, and local leadership can accept or pass. The engine plans schedules before departure; it never controls an aircraft.

Why now?

The FAA switched SMART on around Washington on 21 September 2026, three months after contracting Air Space Intelligence. Europe is drafting the rules in parallel: EASA’s June 2026 concept paper reaches past human teaming to automation where the human may be absent.

Who’s building it?

A software vendor, the FAA’s Command Center, Europe’s aviation regulator, and a union left outside.

01 · The market
Who’s in it
Builders — flow-management software vendors working inside the Command Center.
Buyers — air navigation agencies replacing screens and spreadsheets with one AI-supported planning layer.
Gatekeepers — aviation safety regulators and the staff who accept suggestions.
What’s at stake
Whether a person reviewing each machine suggestion is enough assurance for AI working inside safety-critical national airspace.
Who shapes the tool when controllers are absent.
Whether Europe’s draft rules become the template elsewhere.
What’s unsettled
Whether SMART cuts delays; no independent result exists yet.
How often staff actually pass on the engine’s scheduling suggestions.
When EASA’s promised second proposal carries AI trustworthiness into binding domain rules.
02 · How the demand matureda progression, not a timeline
Novelty
An AI engine visualises demand and congestion hours to weeks ahead.
Retention
The FAA plans a staged rollout from Washington to other regions.
Willingness to pay
NPR puts the software overhaul at $875 million, within a wider modernisation push.
Category
Air-traffic flow planning becomes a category where AI suggests and people decide.
03 · Where the market goesthe forks, not a prediction
→The reviewed engine: staff keep accepting or passing each suggestion, and SMART stays a planning aid across the country.
→Acceptance becomes routine, and the human review thins into a formality nobody audits.
→Controllers win a seat in the design, and the tool’s reach is set by bargaining.
→EASA’s levels of assistance, teaming and automation become the shared language for aviation AI.
The forks turn on whether review by people stays a real decision at each suggestion, or settles into a signature on the machine’s plan.

The panel on this signal
They agreed on
–SMART plans traffic flows before departure at Command Center level; it gives no instructions inside the tower.
–Europe’s AI rules for aviation are still proposals.
–Every published benefit comes from the agency itself, with no independent measure yet.
The air-traffic flow-management specialist disagreed on
–A schedule accepted upstream sets the sector workload hours later, so the real control sits before any controller sees it.
