The Watched Cab

Since July 2026, EU cars must carry a driver distraction warning using infrared eye-tracking. US truck drivers have sued an AI dash-cam maker over face and plate scanning without consent.

What is it?

A camera model now watches the driver. Every new EU car and van must warn a distracted driver, which reporting describes as infrared eye tracking, under a rule that bars identification. In US fleets, truckers allege an AI dash cam read plates and faces without consent.

Why now?

The EU requirement took effect on 7 July 2026 for every newly registered car and van. Seventeen days later, two drivers filed a class action against Motive Technologies in California. One camera is now a legal duty in Europe and a contested product in American trucking.

01 · The market
Who’s in it
Builders — carmakers and fleet vendors pointing camera models at drivers.
Buyers — new-car owners and fleet operators, with truck drivers facing the lens.
Gatekeepers — the European Commission and the Northern District of California.
What’s at stake
Whether a camera built to catch distraction stays a warning device or becomes a record of the driver.
Whether drivers consented to the inward-facing cameras in fleet cabs.
Up to $2,500 per class member, if proven.
What’s unsettled
What exact thresholds the EU delegated rule sets for a distraction warning.
Whether the court finds Motive’s cameras broke California law.
Whether a software update could turn a mandated warning camera into a recorder.
02 · How the demand matureda progression, not a timeline
Novelty
Fleets buy AI dash cams to coach drivers and cut crashes.
Retention
A driver-facing camera becomes standard in every new EU car.
Willingness to pay
Fleet buyers weigh camera value against legal exposure over what the lens collects.
Category
Driver monitoring becomes regulated safety equipment with written limits on data use.
03 · Where the market goesthe forks, not a prediction
→Warning or record: cameras stay limited to live alerts, or software updates and fleet contracts turn them into stored footage.
→The Motive case proceeds, and fleet vendors rewrite consent terms for inward cameras.
→The claims fail, and fleet camera data use stays governed mainly by contracts between companies.
→The EU no-identification limit becomes a template for fleet cameras elsewhere.
It turns on whether the data limits written for the car’s own warning camera hold once the same hardware sits in fleets run for business.

The panel on this signal
They agreed on
–A camera model reading the driver is now required equipment in every new EU car and van.
–The EU rule bars the system from identifying the driver.
–The fleet case is one filing of allegations, with no ruling on what Motive collected.
The occupational fatigue scientist disagreed on
–Where the eyes point is a weak proxy for fatigue; drivers can stare ahead and still be dangerously drowsy.
