The Unretouched Promise

A brand built on real, unretouched bodies has to say what it won’t generate, not just what it won’t edit. Aerie stretched its 2014 pledge to AI-generated bodies.

What is it?

A brand whose whole promise is real, unaltered bodies now has to say what it won’t generate, not just what it won’t edit. Dove made that extension in 2024, for skincare; Aerie, an intimates brand, made the identical claim in 2026 — two brands, not yet a movement.

Why now?

Generative tools made a synthetic body cheap to produce, right as brands built on real ones needed a new line to hold. A 2026 EU statute now requires labelling AI-generated ad content, a rule that would make either brand’s claim easier to check if tested.

Who’s building it?

Two brands in different categories, plus the EU regime that would make either pledge checkable.

01 · The market
Who’s in it
Dove — the original pledge, tied to its own research.
Aerie — an intimates brand, not a beauty one, extending the identical no-AI-bodies claim.
Shoppers — with two named promises and no independent way to check either.
What’s at stake
A ‘no-AI’ pledge is becoming a claim any advertiser can make about its imagery, not one category’s promise.
Two brands is a pattern, not yet a movement.
Neither pledge has ever been independently tested or audited.
What’s unsettled
Does a pledge like this survive the first AI-generated slip caught?
Will the EU’s labelling duty ever actually test either claim?
Whether a skincare-only claim can meaningfully be compared with an apparel one at all.
02 · How the demand matureda progression, not a timeline
The original pledge
Dove tied its no-AI promise to research it commissioned itself.
A second category
Aerie made the identical claim two years later, for intimates.
A shared claim, not a category
what joins Dove and Aerie is the position, not the product.
A checkable claim
the EU’s labelling duty would make either pledge easier to test.
03 · Where the market goesthe forks, not a prediction
→Either more brands adopt the identical pledge across more categories, or Dove and Aerie stay the two isolated cases the record holds today.
→The EU’s labelling duty could make either claim checkable, or stay too general to reach it.
→One AI-generated image slipping through either pledge would test a reputational exposure no one has priced yet.
→Or the claim quietly becomes as unverifiable as any other marketing promise.
Underneath every fork sits one unaudited premise: a promise to never generate a body rests entirely on the brand’s own word, not on any independent check.

The panel on this signal
They agreed on
–Two named brands is real evidence of a pattern, but it is not yet a wider movement across categories.
–Aerie sells intimates, not beauty, and that difference matters.
–Neither Dove’s nor Aerie’s claim has ever been independently checked or audited by anyone.
The advertising-claims auditor disagreed on
–An unaudited ‘no-AI’ pledge is no different from any other unverifiable marketing claim, until someone actually checks it.
