The Invented Artisan

AI-made craftspeople and farewell-sale stories are used to sell clothing, jewellery and lamps as a small maker’s work. ABC News and Which? traced such shops in 2026.

What is it?

AI images and videos supply the maker behind goods sold online. ABC News found dozens of retailers, from clothing to lamps, presenting AI-made craftspeople in need of support. Which? found seven accounts with apparently AI-made artisans. How many shoppers meet the pitch is open.

Why now?

Marshini Chetty, a University of Chicago computer scientist, tells ABC News that AI can create photos of people who look like someone who might be making handmade goods, and reviews at scale. Experts cited by ABC warn that sites often go offline or move on to another product.

Who’s building it?

Retailers and accounts present the makers, ABC News and Which? traced them, and YouTube and Meta responded.

01 · The market
Who’s in it
Builders — retailers and social accounts that present AI-made craftspeople.
Buyers — shoppers moved by a craftsperson’s story or a local shop closing down.
Gatekeepers — YouTube, Meta and TikTok, which labelled, investigated or removed flagged content.
What’s at stake
Whether a craftsperson’s story still tells a shopper something about a shop when AI can supply the person.
Whether platforms beyond TikTok remove flagged accounts or label them.
Who answers for a shop that goes offline before complaints?
What’s unsettled
How many shops use AI-made makers, beyond the dozens ABC News found?
Will AI labels reach more of the videos Which? flagged?
Can shoppers tell a real craftsperson from an invented one before they buy?
02 · How the demand matureda progression, not a timeline
Novelty
ABC News finds dozens of retailers selling with AI-made craftspeople.
Spread
Which? finds seven accounts on four platforms with ‘handmade’ items for sale.
Response
TikTok removed the flagged accounts, YouTube labelled a number of videos and Meta was investigating, Which? says.
Category arc
Jeweller Magazine relays a BBC Wales report of a closing-down sale and undelivered jewellery.
03 · Where the market goesthe forks, not a prediction
→Platforms act. Removals like TikTok’s reach the other platforms’ flagged accounts, and AI labels reach more of the videos Which? found.
→The pitch spreads. More shops and accounts present a craftsperson in need of support.
→Shoppers discount the story. A craftsperson’s tale stops counting for much when AI can supply the person.
→Proof replaces story. Shoppers look for a checkable maker, not a told one.
Verification is the open part: whether a shopper can check the person behind a shop, and whether platforms act when an account fails.

The panel on this signal
They agreed on
–ABC News and Which?, in separate investigations, found craftspeople who appear to be AI-made selling goods online.
–Only some flagged videos were removed after Which? alerted platforms.
–ABC’s experts warn that sites often go offline or move on to another product.
The regulatory analyst disagreed on
–A false maker claim breaches goods descriptions, as does a missing parcel. AI cheapens the actor; the offence is old.
