The Automation Wage

As the machine takes the task, the argument turns to the paycheck — who is owed for work that no longer needs doing.

What is it?

A policy argument forming in real time: when software absorbs the task, the wage has to land somewhere — a robot tax, a data royalty, an income floor. The proposals are drafted and serious; adoption is not close. Whether any mechanism survives contact with a treasury is unproven.

Why now?

Cognitive abundance means software now performs tasks that once required a paid human, and the wage that task carried doesn’t vanish so much as go unclaimed. Somebody has to say where it lands. The question every drafter is really asking: redistribute what the machine earns, or absorb the loss?

Who’s building it?

Policy economists and the AI firms themselves, drafting mechanisms neither yet has authority to enact.

01 · The market
Who’s in it
Builders — AI firms proposing mechanisms, and the economists modelling them.
Buyers — displaced workers and the governments weighing whether to act on their behalf.
Gatekeepers — legislators, treasuries, and courts who decide if a levy becomes law.
What’s at stake
Whoever legislates first sets the template every later drafter copies — early proposals become the default others build on.
Public trust in AI firms authoring their own tax.
Government revenue as automation quietly displaces payroll tax.
What’s unsettled
Whether a robot tax slows automation or simply taxes it.
Which base is taxed — the task, the capital, or the output.
Whether income floors get funded before displacement outpaces the political debate around it.
02 · How the demand matureda progression, not a timeline
Proposal
Firms and economists float mechanisms — robot taxes, data royalties, shorter weeks.
Advocacy
Politicians pick up the language, turning proposals into campaign platforms.
Pilot
One jurisdiction tests a narrow version — a levy, a floor, a shortened week.
Precedent
A working example becomes the template every other legislature copies or rejects outright.
03 · Where the market goesthe forks, not a prediction
→Levy or redesign — governments tax the machine’s output, or rebuild payroll and welfare around fewer paid jobs entirely.
→AI firms keep authoring the proposals, setting the frame before legislators catch up.
→A modest rate becomes the global norm, or nations undercut each other to keep automation cheap.
→Displaced workers organise around income floors before any mechanism is funded.
The open question is whether displacement outruns the debate — a wage argument moving faster in speeches than in any actual budget line.

The Deskilling Debate
Automation erodes the expertise it was meant to assist.

The Great Reskilling
Training programmes race to outpace fast-moving skill obsolescence.
39% of core job skills will be outdated by 2030.

The panel on this signal
They agreed on
–The proposals are serious and specific, but no government has actually funded a working mechanism yet.
–AI firms are shaping the frame themselves, well ahead.
–Adoption depends on political will and public appetite, not technical readiness.
The labour economist disagreed on
–Compensation mechanisms announced alongside displacement events often function as reputational positioning rather than income replacement; whether affected workers receive material transfer, versus firms simply documenting good intent, is not established by these announcements.
