The Atom, Recommissioned

A reactor idle for years is being restarted because a data centre needs power every hour of every day, and no grid built for a quieter century can promise that.

What is it?

Microsoft is buying 835 megawatts from a restarted Three Mile Island reactor under a twenty-year deal; Meta has separately committed up to 6.6 gigawatts from Vistra, TerraPower and Oklo. Power procurement once run by utilities now runs through data-centre contracts. Whether it scales past a few buyers stays open.

Why now?

The compute-energy constraint made always-on power a competitive input, not a background cost. Reactors sat idle for want of a buyer willing to sign decades out, and a software company’s balance sheet fits that role. Firm, unwavering supply is what a data centre needs, more than cheap supply.

Who’s building it?

Hyperscalers signing the contracts, with reactor operators and small modular developers building to meet them.

01 · The market
Who’s in it
Builders — reactor operators and small modular reactor developers restarting capacity.
Buyers — hyperscalers signing multi-decade power purchase agreements no traditional utility would sign.
Gatekeepers — utility regulators and communities near the reactors being restarted.
What’s at stake
Whether nuclear becomes the default firm-power source for AI infrastructure, ahead of gas or renewables, not just an exception.
Grid capacity a household shares, unseen, with computing infrastructure.
Capital for advanced reactor projects now tied to tech-sector demand.
What’s unsettled
If this pattern extends beyond the largest hyperscalers to smaller buyers.
Whether restart economics hold once early, premium-priced contracts expire.
How communities near ageing reactors respond once restarts become actual construction.
02 · How the demand matureda progression, not a timeline
Signal
A hyperscaler signs one long contract, proving reactor economics can work again.
Commitment
Multiple companies follow with gigawatt-scale deals across several reactor operators.
Infrastructure
Restarts and new builds move from announcement into real construction and eventual delivery.
Norm
Firm nuclear supply becomes an expected line item in data-centre planning.
03 · Where the market goesthe forks, not a prediction
→Utility-led or tech-led — decided by whether traditional utilities re-enter as buyers, or hyperscalers keep the market to themselves.
→Small modular reactors could scale fast enough to matter, or stay perpetually years away.
→Communities could accept restarts for local jobs, or resist them on renewed safety grounds.
→Premium pricing may hold as contracts renew, or it compresses once supply catches up.
Trust and capital are being built on a bet nobody has proven at scale: whether decades-long, tech-funded power contracts remain attractive once the current AI buildout slows.

The panel on this signal
They agreed on
–The buyer has genuinely changed — technology companies now provide the guaranteed demand utilities used to rely on.
–Firm, always-on power is the real product hyperscalers pay for.
–Restart economics depend entirely on decades-long contract guarantees, not spot prices.
The competition economist disagreed on
–Restarting a decommissioned reactor requires a balance sheet able to underwrite a multi-decade power purchase commitment; that financing profile is available to a small set of hyperscale buyers and does not generalise across the sector.
