Prompt Literacy

Knowing how to ask becomes the new reading and writing — the skill that decides who the machines actually work for.

What is it?

Prompting is becoming a taught skill, ranked with reading and arithmetic — schools and employers now treat a good request as basic competence, not a specialist trick. The tools are cheap; fluency with them is not evenly spread. Whether that fluency outlasts better interfaces is the open part.

Why now?

Models now do the labour; framing the request is the labour that’s left. Cognitive Abundance made thinking cheap for anyone who can direct it well, so the scarce resource stops being access and becomes knowing what to ask for and how to judge what comes back.

Who’s building it?

Schools, employers and edtech platforms are building the training; model makers are shaping what needs teaching.

01 · The market
Who’s in it
Builders — schools, employers and edtech platforms building training and curricula.
Buyers — individuals and workers investing in fluency; employers funding training programmes to keep pace.
Gatekeepers — model providers, schools and policymakers, deciding what officially counts as competence.
What’s at stake
Whoever teaches the skill first sets the norm for what counts as fluent — training becomes the real product.
Employers risk assuming fluency instead of actually building it.
Better interfaces could quietly shrink the gap they created.
What’s unsettled
Whether prompting stays a distinct skill or simply gets designed away.
Whether the real gap is about access, or about judgment.
Whether fluency compounds into lasting advantage, or fades once tools learn to guess.
02 · How the demand matureda progression, not a timeline
Phrasing
Early fluency is just wording tricks — clumsy, coachable, and quick to fade.
Judgment
Knowing what to delegate and how to check it becomes the real test.
Credentialing
Training programmes and certificates turn tacit judgment into something schools and employers can measure and teach.
Baseline expectation
Fluency stops differentiating and becomes assumed, the way typing or email literacy once did.
03 · Where the market goesthe forks, not a prediction
→Durable skill or transitional one — decided by whether interfaces keep needing explicit framing, or quietly learn to infer real intent.
→Whoever ends up owning the training pipeline effectively shapes what counts as competent, skilled use.
→Employers may build fluency training fully in-house, or simply hand the judgment layer to outside providers.
→Fluency training could stay a private cost, or become basic public school infrastructure.
The open question is whether prompting is a real, durable skill — or a workaround that better interfaces will simply design out of existence.

The panel on this signal
They agreed on
–Fluency is shifting from wording tricks to judgment — knowing what to delegate and how to check it.
–A training and credentialing market forms regardless of owner.
–Inequality tracks structured access to real training, not the cost of the tools.
The learning scientist disagreed on
–Interface history favours removal over persistence: as natural-language and voice interfaces mature, the explicit query-crafting skill being taught today likely gets abstracted out within a generation of tooling.
