Post-Ownership

The agent manages access to everything and you own almost none of it — a life rented, renewed and never quite yours.

What is it?

Ownership becomes a login: films, software, cars and clothes now arrive as access, managed by an agent and billed on repeat. Fatigue and fragmentation are pushing people to cancel hard and, sometimes, simply own again. Whether that reverses the trend or just trims its edges is open.

Why now?

Owning things once meant holding them directly; platforms inserted an agent between people and their possessions, making access the easier default to sell. That same disintermediation can re-bundle ownership as fatigue mounts. The force cuts both ways — more access, or its retreat.

Who’s building it?

Platforms and their billing agents construct the access layer; consumers only decide whether to keep renewing.

01 · The market
Who’s in it
Builders — platforms and the agents managing access on their behalf.
Buyers — people paying for access to things they used to simply own outright.
Gatekeepers — app stores, device makers and providers deciding what cancellation actually costs.
What’s at stake
Recurring revenue keeps compounding even as cancellations spike — fatigue erodes trust yet proves the model’s grip.
Perceived loyalty may only be renewal habit, not choice.
Reputational risk grows wherever cancellation is deliberately made difficult.
What’s unsettled
Whether this marks a real reversal or just a temporary correction.
Which categories genuinely revert to ownership, and which merely rebrand.
Whether providers respond with real flexibility, or better-disguised versions of the same lock-in.
02 · How the demand matureda progression, not a timeline
Fatigue
Renewals pile up quietly until their total cost finally becomes impossible to ignore.
Audit
People review the full list and cut whatever no longer earns its place.
Reversion
A minority chooses simply owning again — one price, paid once, no renewal, no agent.
Response
Providers answer with bundling, pause options and flexible plans to keep cancellations down.
03 · Where the market goesthe forks, not a prediction
→Converge or diverge — the model absorbs the backlash with flexibility, or ownership returns in enough categories to matter.
→The billing agent itself may become the product, not whatever it happens to manage.
→Regulators could force cancellation to be as easy as signing up, changing the economics entirely.
→Or fatigue itself fades, and the access model simply continues as before.
The open question is whether cancelling is principle or just price sensitivity — because only one of those actually threatens the model long-term.

The panel on this signal
They agreed on
–Recurring-revenue pressure and cancellation fatigue are both real, pulling the same market in opposite directions at once.
–Providers will answer fatigue with flexibility before conceding ground.
–Value increasingly sits with whoever controls billing and access, not the goods.
The behavioral economist disagreed on
–The supporting cases concentrate in a small number of high-cost product categories; generalising from those specific examples to a broad reversal of ownership norms across consumer goods overstates what a limited category sample can establish.
