Agentic Commerce

Your agent does the shopping — comparing, haggling, buying — and the storefront you once browsed simply falls away.

What is it?

Shoppers hand the browsing to an agent: state a goal, and software reads across retailers, compares options and, increasingly, completes the purchase. The storefront a brand built stops being what a customer meets first. Whether the agent also buys, or only chooses, stays open.

Why now?

Discovery used to run through pages a brand designed. Agents strip that layer out — they read structured data directly, so the retailer’s interface stops mattering to the buyer that matters. The platform in between is what gets cut out. Retailers now compete to be legible to software, not shoppers.

Who’s building it?

Retailers building machine-readable catalogs and checkout endpoints, while OpenAI and Stripe set the shared protocol.

01 · The market
Who’s in it
Builders — agent platforms and the retailers building machine-readable feeds.
Buyers — shoppers who state a goal and let the agent compare and buy.
Gatekeepers — payment rails, app platforms, and regulators now weighing consumer protection.
What’s at stake
The metric that decides who wins shifts from click-through to whether an agent cites and returns your product.
Brands a machine cannot read simply disappear from consideration.
Checkout location stays unsettled — in-chat, on-site, or split entirely.
What’s unsettled
Whether the agent transacts too, or stops at recommending and comparing.
Whether checkout finally settles in-chat, on-site, or splits by category.
Whether smaller retailers can actually afford machine-readable feeds, or only large platforms can.
02 · How the demand matureda progression, not a timeline
Discovery
Shoppers ask an agent to research options instead of browsing pages.
Trust
The agent’s picks prove reliable enough that people stop double-checking them.
Delegation
People move from reviewing every recommendation to authorising the agent to complete straightforward purchases outright.
Category
Enough completed purchases to justify dedicated checkout endpoints and real compliance work.
03 · Where the market goesthe forks, not a prediction
→One checkout or many — agents converge on one shared protocol, or every platform builds its own incompatible standard retailers must chase.
→Value quietly concentrates at the agent layer, leaving retailers as interchangeable fulfilment sitting behind it.
→Retailers that still cannot expose machine-readable feeds simply drop out of the agent’s consideration set entirely.
→Regulation could well arrive before norms settle, locking in rules nobody has tested.
The open question is whether delegation goes all the way to purchase, or stops at recommendation — that line decides who actually captures the value.

The panel on this signal
They agreed on
–The agent has already become the first filter on shopping — that discovery layer is now settled, not contested.
–Retailers must genuinely become machine-readable, or they simply disappear.
–Checkout location is still being actively negotiated between platforms, retailers and payment providers.
The retail analyst disagreed on
–Current agent deployments concentrate on comparison and recommendation, with final purchase confirmation still routed to the human; whether autonomous completion of transactions becomes standard, rather than agents settling into a research-only role, remains unverified.
